DCS has used data included in the ADCS Safeguarding Pressures Phase 8 research to develop a supplementary thematic report on children’s mental health. It draws together returns from 125 local authorities, 21 interviews with directors or assistant directors of children’s services and supplements this with existing data to provide further evidence of a crisis in children’s mental health. Cardiff University has released a briefing paper exploring the mental health and wellbeing of children in Wales immediately before and 18 months after the start of the pandemic. Findings from student health and wellbeing surveys include: the percentage of 11- to 16-year-olds reporting elevated symptoms of depression increased from 24% in 2019 to 28% in 2022; the increase was particularly noticeable amongst children in year seven, of whom 21% reported elevated symptoms of depression, compared with 15% in 2019. The report suggests that continued monitoring of indicators is necessary to identify groups who may need support.

Institute of Economic Affairs Lockdown lessons in health economics: the case of alcohol .This study finds that taxation, licensing or bans on advertisements are unlikely to reduce alcohol-related harm or deaths. It argues that rather than focusing on reducing consumption policy-makers should address the causes of problem drinking, such as mental health problems or lack of access to support.
